After sitting down and considering a broad range of
topics for this semester’s term paper, I finally chose to jump into the
conversation on women and the gender stereotyping they face in the workplace.
This topic I felt not only affects me but will affect every little girl growing
up and aspiring to be something in the world. I felt it was my job to now delve
into my sources and write my paper on why this is an issue and if it will
continue being one. I placed myself into my work and feel like in doing so course
outcome #1 is clear to my understanding. I am a part of the discourse community
I researched. My generation is too.
In my paper I have discussed why gender stereotyping has
come to be and how. Coinciding with course outcome #3, I talked about the terms
associated with men as terms that relate to power and dominance (agentic). And
how the terms associated with women are terms that relate to community and
caring for others (communal). Multiple sources I have read referred to women in
the workplace as there to keep the peace and just pave the way for the man to
lead. From the few sources I read where women are the leaders, they are chalked
up to have receiving that position as mere luck, or if they earned it, they
were “bitches”.
Course outcome #2 was the most important to demonstrate. When
it came time for me to conduct my own studies, I was determined to see if boys
and girls of my generation believed we can move past this gender hindrance. I
decided that I would do a survey, but felt I didn’t gain any new information
than I had by reading papers. So I then decided to recreate the Howard/Heidi
case study from Harvard. I loved doing this case study, and the students’
responses were exactly what I needed. I gained the answer I was looking for,
and was able to come full circle in my work.
My main goal was to write to the best of my capabilities
and applying course outcome #5, and using the Writing Center and redoing
assignments to make my work as concise as I could the end result would lead to
course outcome #4. My paper is a clear production of an analysis on the problem
of gender stereotyping against women in the workplace, using clear
organizational strategies that made my line of inquiry.
